Day 58 – See the largest animal that has ever lived on the planet (not Charlie Sheen)! Check out the Beaty Biodiversity Museum up at UBC…
Canada’s largest blue whale skeleton (at a whopping 25 meters) is on display at the newly opened Beaty Biodiversity Museum. This thing is BIG! About the size of 2 city busses joined together. The museum is also home to a theatre and 20,000 square feet of exhibits, which pull from UBC’s natural history collections of over two million plant, fungi, and animal specimens.
The museum itself is not that exciting, more like a massive storage facility for every living species you can think of… a little creepy actually. Even if you don’t go in to the museum just walk up and check out the atrium which houses the whale. It’s a pretty humbling experience standing by something so massive.
Open from Wednesday to Sunday, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Admission costs $12 for adults, $10 for youths (13 to 17 years old) and seniors, and $8 for kids (5 to 12 years old). UBC faculty, staff, and students get in free.
