The Graduate came
along at a great time in American art, when mainstream assumptions, at the core
of American ideology, were hemorrhaging from a counterculture primed to boil
over. The Graduate challenged gender & class relations & ushered
in a new class of American hero. The
self-doubting, nervous, unsure leading men – Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Woody
Allen, etc. – picked up the torch where Gary Cooper & John Wayne left off
& mirrored the skepticism & lack of confidence in America. “Mrs Robinson, you’re trying to seduce
me,” remains one of the iconic lines of American cinema…
The Arts Club has been pumping out the classics lately. Following up Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf with this adaptation of the Charles
Webb’s novel, The Graduate runs until
May 14 at the Granville Island Stage.
